De Nederlandse taal bevat een aantal onvertaalbare woorden. Vaak heb je niet door dat deze woorden niet te vertalen zijn, tot het moment dat je een anderstalig equivalent nodig hebt om uit te leggen wat de betekenis van een woord is aan iemand die de taal niet spreekt. Een voorbeeld dat je waarschijnlijk wel kent is het woord gezelligheid. Er bestaat tot dusver geen enkel anderstalig woord dat precies de lading dekt van gezelligheid. Vandaag doen we echter toch een poging om 8 van zulke onvertaalbare woorden naar het Engels te vertalen!

Onvertaalbare woorden
1. GEZELLIG
This can be a feeling that is experienced or an ambiance that is evoked by a certain place. It can be best described as a mix of cosiness, domesticity, familiarity, warmth and joy. The feeling is often associated with the joy gained by spending time with family and friends, and the word described a nice, joyful atmosphere of satisfaction.
2. VOORPRET
It literally translates to “pre-fun”. This is the feeling of joy before an event, combined with positive prospects of the actual event. It is the joy about the (likely) actual joy of the event that is yet to come. Unlike anticipation, this is strictly pleasurable.
3. HÈ HÈ
These words are uttered as a sign of relief, for instance at the end of a long day or after an exhausting task. The person who says it often wants to indicate that something is finally done. It can also be uttered after someone waits a long time, for instance: “Hè, hè, the food has finally arrived.
4. UITWAAIEN
To go for a walk (often by the sea) in order to clear one’s head in the wind, to get some fresh air, to clear one’s mind during a walk.
5. GEDOGEN
To tolerate something which can actually not be tolerated, to turn a blind eye to something, to choose not to enforce a certain law
6. NATAFELEN
To linger on after dinner, to continue talks even though dinner is long finished, when you had a good time at dinner and do not want to leave the table yet. It often happens with a coffee (or two).
7. LEKKER PUH
A teasing expression which means “that serves you right” or “you deserved that”. It is mostly used by younger children.
8. UITBUIKEN
Sitting back after a long and fulfilling meal, letting your belly out, taking the time to let your body “process” all of the food you ate.

Ik denk dat de term ‘anticipatory pleasure’ redelijk de lading dekt als vertaling van ‘voorpret’.
‘Anticipation is half the fun’ is a saying which covers ‘voorpret’, but not as succinctly as in Dutch!
